Water Sports and Semantics

Sometime this past summer, my friend Lauren had been telling me about a place nearby where you could go paddleboarding, which to my understanding is a person on a surfboard minus the waves and plus an oar.  Trying to inject some interest into the day-to-day inter-employee conversations, I had been telling people at Banana about this impending activity.

Perhaps a week or two later, our new manager Kim struck up a conversation with me, and while I commend the fact that she actually listened to what I’d said and displayed some interest, there was something amiss:

Kim: How were your days off?

Kristi: Good!  I relaxed, did some reading, went climbing one night.

Kim: Did you do that… what were you gonna do?  Waterboarding?

Kristi: ………………………………………………………………….. Paddleboarding……..

To clarify, I did neither on my days off.
